Hamley Jenkins

PAINTER & ILLUSTRATOR

Sketching is an essential part of an artist’s work that underpins every creative expression; this website acts as a catalog of the creative paths I am pursuing that often occur in response to the brilliance of others; actors, musicians, dancers, writers all feature in my work. Filtering the experience of these inspirational moments through the act of drawing distills them, each piece is loaded with atmosphere, the aspiration being to communicate how it felt to be present.

Graduating from Bath College with a BA (Hons) in Design and Illustration in 1993 I went on to work in packaging and illustration, only committing to paint in acrylics for environmental reasons in 2008. After enrolling on a drawing course with the excellent Alex Cree I became the Roaming Sketch Artist for Wilderness Festival for 5 consecutive years – all the drawings appear here - and this led me to draw people in motion. In 2020 the pandemic brought to a close an 18 month residency at Jazz Live at the Crypt in Camberwell,  a jazz club that has maintained it’s presence in South London for over 25 years. I am most grateful to the music trustees at the Crypt for their generosity in allowing me to draw live there every week, weaving the music and musicians together in my work. Now I am part of a new multi disciplinary creative collective called TheBrick in Farringdon that affords plenty of opportunity to continue this work.

During the past 10 years I have taken part in and volunteered for Dulwich Festival’s Artists’ Open House, had illustration work feature in a Folio Society edition of the classic book ‘Black Beauty’, and was selected for the House of Illustration 2016 Book Illustration Competition Exhibition (details here). The 2016 Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize show exhibited one of my nocturnes, my work was in their Art Sale in 2020 and is currently in their Masterpiece Collection. My paintings have also been selected for the 2017 ING Discerning Eye Exhibition and the 2020 ING Discerning Eye Exhibition.
